What is colorectal cancer?
Colorectal cancer, or colon and rectal cancer, is a form of abnormal cell growth which strikes the colon and rectum. In the U.S., colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer for men and the fourth most common for women.
What causes colorectal cancer?
The etiology of colorectal cancer is not completely understood; however, we know that the abnormal cells often arise from polyps or abnormal growths in the lining or mucosa of the colon. Early-stage colorectal cancer often shows no symptoms, which is why preventive screening is recommended.
What are the symptoms of colorectal cancer? When symptoms do occur, they may give rise to a variety of complaints, including:
- Blood in the stool
- Rectal bleeding
- Narrow stools
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- A sense that the bowel does not empty completely
- Gas pains
- Change in bowel habits
- A sense of bloating, cramps, or fullness
- Fatigue during activity that was previously tolerated
* If these symptoms persist present, it is important to see your doctor.
How is colorectal cancer treated? Depending on the size of the cancer, its location, pathology and the depth of penetration, colorectal cancer may be treated by your proctologist endoscopically, or with some combination of the following:
- Surgery
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
- Targeted therapies
Please note: If you have colorectal cancer, it is essential to speak with a specialist such as a proctologist to determine the best treatment plan for your needs. Please feel free to contact the Proctology Institute to learn more today.
