The proctologists of the Proctology Institute of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach & Huntington Beach are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment (removal) of anal warts. Anal warts are small growths of skin that appear around the anus. They can be removed and may be cut away using a surgical blade, a laser, or a heated instrument, depending on their size and location. Anal warts are most commonly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) – which our proctologists can test you for – and are usually transmitted through sexual contact but not necessarily through anal intercourse.
Many people infected with HPV have no symptoms and no anal warts, but are still contagious. The anal warts are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or (rarely) oral sex with someone who is infected.
What are anal warts?
Anal warts are small growths which can appear in the internal and the external part of the anus. Although they are caused by human papillomavirus, or HPV, which is an STD, the act of anal intercourse is not a necessary prerequisite for developing anal warts. Anal warts present as small (but may develop into large) warts that ultimately cover the anal area and the skin around the genitalia.
What are the symptoms of anal warts? Many individuals with anal warts are either unaware that they have them, or are too embarrassed to seek treatment. If left untreated, anal warts can precipitate further symptoms including:
- Itchiness
- Bleeding
- Mucus discharge
- Feeling of a lump or mass near the anal area

How are anal warts treated and removed by the proctologists?
Anal warts must be removed immediately by the proctologist upon diagnosis, as they could otherwise develop into larger sizes and eventually increase the risk of anal cancer. Treatments include:
