A Rising Tide of Colorectal Cancer in Young Adults

This news has been brewing for some time, but it took until recently for the full breadth of the epidemic to come to light. Colorectal cancer, a dangerous and often fatal disease, has been striking more young people than it used – and experts are scratching their heads:

Cases of colon and rectal cancer are on the rise in people under the age of 50, a group that’s rarely screened for them. According to a recent study, rates among younger people increased by more than 11% between 2004 and 2014.

The disease seems especially likely to strike nonwhite patients, including Black Americans and First Nations cultures in Alaska, among others.

Generally patients complain of bleeding first, possibly accompanied by pain or discomfort during bowel movements. Although these symptoms can easily be dismissed as hemorrhoids or anal fissure, it’s important to rule out a diagnosis of cancer, a step many doctors fail to take.

Hemorrhoids Were This Close to Getting Into Empire Strikes back

A couple of you have sent me this story, which hilariously recounts how David Prowse – the original actor inside Darth Vader’s costume – messed around with the actual dialogue in the second film of the original trilogy.

It seems that once he realized that whatever he said would eventually be overdubbed in the sonorous basso of James Earl Jones, Prowse decided to have a little fun with his lines, replacing a famous reference to asteroids with a not-so-scary reference to hemorrhoids:

Little wonder that the film remains beloved generations hence, as the asteroids reference certainly plays better in context. Yet some of us who work with hemorrhoids for a living cannot help but applaud the sentiment behind the original line, which read as a forceful (ahem) paean to proper hemorrhoid treatment and care.
