Do You Have Secret Hemorrhoids?

Strange but true: although hemorrhoids can cause torn tissues and bleeding, you may not even notice it. That’s because internal hemorrhoids live somewhere north of a barrier known as the dentate line, which distinguishes the tissues of the GI tract from the tissues of your skin.

Below the line, you feel and experience everything just as you would elsewhere on your body: scratches hurt, burns burn, and so on. Above the line there are no nerve endings to alert you of any changes in surface cells, leading to a somewhat surreal situation wherein you can have a superficial injury or condition and be completely unaware it has occurred.

But internal hemorrhoids alert you to their presence in other ways. You may find bright red blood in the stool or in your toilet bowl. You may experience a diffuse itching sensation that is hard to pin down. And you may have ongoing issues with defecation, or find that it is harder to strain and push than it was in the recent past.

After Hemorrhoid Surgery: A Story

Many of my patients at the Los Angeles Proctology Institute have questions about what to expect following hemorrhoid removal surgery. Will it hurt? How long? Can I do the things I normally do? Will they just come back anyway?

Many of these questions are covered on our hemorrhoid information page, but some of the subjective concerns about the experience of hemorrhoid surgery remain a mystery. That’s why I like to share stories such as these, which offer a glimpse behind the curtain, as it were, and give prospective patients a better sense of what to expect in the way of healing and recovery:

As things heal externally I have a lot of itching and the lidocaine has been awesome for that. My pain has dramatically improved. A Cautionary Tale About Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is one such issue – a rare but precious diagnosis that can quickly graduate to a life-threatening illness without good detection and prevention.

Colon Cancer Still Climbing Among Young People

Colon cancer figures have gradually moved from concerning to alarming over the last ten years, and experts nationwide are voicing their feelings. The incidence of colon cancer overall has nearly doubled since the 1950’s. It’s not all bad news, though: even though the percentage is rising, the overage incidence of this disease is still rare.

But vigilance is widely recommended, not least because early detection is the surest way to prevent yourself from joining that grim statistical cohort. As one page described the symptoms to look for:

How to Get Hemorrhoids

I spend a lot of time in my capacity as a leading hemorrhoid doctor in Los Angeles going over how to prevent those irritating little bumps. Typically the advice centers around diet and exercise, with a healthy dose of proper defecation technique thrown in.

But confusion still reigns throughout most of the populace about why we get hemorrhoids, and which behaviors tend to bring them on. Part of the confusion is that the facts can seem contradictory many people are aware that constipation causes hemorrhoids, for instance, but did you know that you can also get them for the opposite reason? Frequent diarrhea can be just as hard on the tissues of this area as training and getting nowhere, as this article attests:

One of the most common hemorrhoid causes: going too often. You’d think this was counter-intuitive, but pooping multiple times a day means you spend a lot of time on the toilet, and possibly bearing down and straining.
