The best in class proctologists of the Proctology Institute (Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach & Huntington Beach) offer comprehensive colonoscopy services (routine diagnostic & cancer screening). A colonoscopy is a safe outpatient procedure performed by our proctologists to examine a person’s rectum and intestine for polyps and the possible presence of colon cancer and other diseases. A typical colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes and is accompanied by medication to allow a person to be comfortable during testing. We offer different types of preparations for your colonoscopy to make you as comfortable as possible.
Once the colonoscopy has begun, if the proctologist finds a polyp, it can easily be removed. Our proctologists can also biopsy suspicious-looking tissue through the colonoscope for additional testing.
Colon cancer is one of the most preventative cancers of today, yet it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Many people avoid preventive screenings and visits to their proctologist due to perceived discomfort and embarrassment. Advanced symptoms, however, make treatment options more difficult or nearly impossible. Regular colonoscopy screenings save lives.
The proctologists of the Proctology Institute (Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Huntington Beach) offer a minimally invasive, nearly pain-free approach to a colonoscopy. During the procedure, a flexible video endoscope is advanced through the colon to find and remove precancerous polyps (this procedure is also known as Flexible Sigmoidoscopy). Systematic removal of polyps can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer by 90%.
Who should get a colonoscopy?
- Everyone age 50 years or older
- Anyone age 40 years or older with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, or 10 years prior to the age of the youngest first degree relative at diagnosis
- Anyone with a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, a history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Ulcerative Colitis, hemorrhoids, Chron’s Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) complaints
What exactly is a colonoscopy?
A Colonoscopy is a safe and common screening procedure performed by our proctologists to detect abnormalities such as colon cancer and polyps. (Some polyps are precancerous, and may develop into cancer with time.) A flexible fiber-optic instrument known as a colonoscope, which includes a miniature light and camera, is gently inserted into the colon and rectum. The colonoscope is then guided through the full length of the colon after the air has been pumped into the colon to keep it patent.
The advantage of a colonoscopy is that polyps may be removed at the time of the colonoscopy, decreasing the risk for colon and rectal cancer.
When is a colonoscopy performed?
Currently, a colonoscopy is recommended every five years for all adults over 50. People with a family history of colon cancer may require a screening colonoscopy as early as ten years before their relative was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. African-Americans should have their colonoscopy performed at age 45.
Colonoscopy may also be recommended for the following symptoms:
- Change in bowel habits
- Bloody stool
- Colitis, or inflammation of the bowel
- Abdominal pain
- Suspicious growth or for biopsy
