Rectal prolapse describes a condition where either the lining of the rectum or the entire wall of the rectum becomes loose and falls into, or even out of, the rectum through the anus. The proctologists of the Proctology Institute (Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Huntington Beach, or Newport Beach) can properly diagnose your condition and discuss your treatment option with you. If you are suffering from the symptoms of a rectocele, it’s essential that you contact a proctologist today to learn more about your options – your condition will only worsen.
A rectocele is essentially the condition of a fallen rectum, which typically presents as a bulge from the front wall of the rectum into the vagina (sometimes confused with a hemorrhoid). The pressure generated by the rectocele can cause thinning of the rectal wall, which compromises the tissue between the rectum and the vagina.
What causes a rectocele? Rectoceles are usually caused by a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as thinning of the structure separating the vagina from the rectum called the Perineal Body. This can happen for a number of reasons, but some common factors include:
- Childbirth trauma
- Chronic constipation
- Hysterectomy
- Decreased estrogen level, or menopause
What are the symptoms of a rectocele?
Most women with a rectocele never realize that they have the condition, as they are asymptomatic. For a small percentage of women, however, the presence of a rectocele can inspire vaginal and rectal complaints such as:
- Vaginal bulging, what feels like a vaginal mass
- Pain and discomfort during intercourse
- Vaginal bleeding
- Constipation, or difficulty passing bowel movements
- Pelvic pressure and generalized pain
What treatments are available by your proctologists for a rectocele?
Prior to any medical or surgical treatment, a thorough exam with your proctologist is necessary. The physician will usually recommend some early measures, including:
- Dietary changes: aim for high fiber and hydration
- Medications such as fiber supplements or a stool softener
- Surgery
- ThermiVa – Non-Invasive Radiofrequency Treatment
