What is an anal pap smear and why might I need one?
An anal pap smear is performed for early detection of human papillomavirus (HPV), and abnormal cells in the anal canal. The anal pap smear examines a small sample of cells obtained from the anus for any abnormal cell growth. As a screening procedure, it can effectively detect, reduce, and initiate treatment for anal cancer.
Routine anal pap smears may reduce the risk of anal cancer rate by detecting high-grade anal dysplasia – a precancerous lesion. HPV is the most common STD, so patients with these risk factors should undergo the screening:
- Patients who engage in anal sex
- HIV
- Cervical dysplasia
- Vaginal dysplasia
- Vulvar dysplasia
- Cervical cancer
- Genital and anal warts
- Bleeding from the anus
- Any signs of abnormal discharge from the anus
- Anal cancer
How often is an anal pap smear performed?
- For HIV positive patients, a routine anal pap smear is performed once a year
- For HIV negative patients at high risk for anal dysplasia, a routine anal pap smear is performed every year
- If your anal pap smear produces an abnormal result, a procedure known as High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) will be recommended for a more detailed view of your anal canal
