Training in proctology is a lengthy and demanding process, as I describe in this helpful FAQ. But not every moment of that training has to be arduous or confusing, which is why our teaching tools have continued to evolve over many years.

The latest is this synthetic anatomical device designed to help students understand how to deliver proctological examinations properly. Dubbed the “robotic butt” by its inventors, the device is actually a sophisticated environment that provides useful feedback based on variables such as pressure and accuracy:

“Our goal is to get students more comfortable with these mortifying scenarios,” says Dr. Lok. “There aren’t enough opportunities for students to practice, which causes them a lot of anxiety.”
